KIVA

Kiva Microlending Program

Northwoods has been making donations Kiva since 2010. More than 1.7 billion people around the world are unbanked and can’t access the financial services they need. Kiva is an international nonprofit, founded in 2005 in San Francisco, with a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive. Kiva does this by crowdfunding loans and unlocking capital for the underserved, improving the quality and cost of financial services, and addressing the underlying barriers to financial access around the world. Through Kiva’s work, students can pay for tuition, women can start businesses, farmers are able to invest in equipment and families can afford needed emergency care. As the loans are repaid, capital is cycled back into the lending program.

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated vulnerable populations around the world, including the international refugee community. More than 70 million people globally have been unable to “stay home” for their health and safety, as they’ve been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, war, persecution, and human rights violations. These dangerous conditions diminish financial opportunity for refugees. Join us in supporting refugees as they build their new lives.

Northwoods has donated $6,350 since 2010. We loan because: Through lending we can help support the interdependent web of which we are all a part. To make a donation directly to Kiva, find the Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Church team here, and make your donation on the Kiva Website.
